When in 2014 we were at the Arctowski Station Festival in Warsaw , with the insecure idea in our minds that it would be great to go through something like that in Antarctica, we didn’t expect that our dream will be fulfilled so quickly. Yesterday, 26 th February, we celebrated a very important event- the 40th anniversary of Station. And it is precisely here, in the Antarctic, in the very center of events.
Month: February 2016
The footsteps of fur seals
It’s time to face the fur seals. We were helping Marta in monitoring of Antarctic pinnipeds last time. We’ve had from The Ecology Glacier to Baranowski Glacier district.
Lessons from The Arctowski Station
As some of you remember, in Hornsund, I worked as a teacher in a nationwide project called “Eduscience”. So I liked it, that even after the return I had the pleasure to work there and so it turned into the three years of unforgettable experience.
Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz
Some of you probably remember that we spent New Year’s Eve in the station, while a part of our team went to visit our Brazilian neighbours on the other side of the Gulf. However, what is delayed is not lost, so we also had the opportunity to visit the Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station (Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz) a few days ago.
Donuts, donuts, french dough fingers
In spite of all appearances, in the summer, in the remote Antarctica, the clock also can accelerate and we didn’t even watch back, and now the time for carnival has come where there is a lot of fun and even better food.
Radio communication with Demay Point cottage
In the place where there is no cellular phones, the possibility of efficient radio links is extremely important. In the Arctowski area, we communicate on VHF marine frequencies. This is a local connectivity within several kilometers. But the terrain often shortens the distance up to 2-3 km, especially, if you use portable radios. The house on the Demay Peninsula was one of those places where radio communication was much more difficult.
